History and legacy: from basic science to commercial technology

teCH4+ is the result of more than four decades of applied research in anaerobic digestion and thermal hydrolysis, initiated in 1979 by Fernando Fernández-Polanco at the University of Valladolid. What began as basic science was transformed, after a scaling-up process, into a mature commercial technology. This scientific legacy defines the identity of teCH4+: developing rigorous, efficient, and practical solutions that solve real organic waste treatment problems.

In 1979, the First International Symposium on Anaerobic Digestion was held in Cardiff, marking the beginning of a scientific discipline in Europe. Inspired by this foundational event, Fernando Fernández-Polanco focused his professional career on anaerobic digestion from that point onward; and during the 1980s and 1990s, he consolidated the University of Valladolid as a global benchmark in this environmental technology through researchers training, seminars organisation, and pioneering projects development.

In 2006, Sara I. Pérez-Elvira´s PhD started a new research line: thermal hydrolysis as an anaerobic digestion pretreatment. With promising results, the technology was scaled up from lab pilots to an industrial-scale demonstration plant treating all the secondary sludge from the Valladolid WWTP.

In 2014, the accumulated knowledge moved beyond the university environment with teCH4+ incorporation. The goal was to transform basic science and applied research into a technology capable of competing in the market.

After years of development and patenting, 2018 marked a turning point: teCH4+ was awarded the Copero WWTP project in Seville, competing directly with established technologies, and installed its first commercial reference, which has been in operation since 2020.

Since then, the technology has matured in real operation, building up references across pilot and commercial plants.

In 2022, in memoriam, we named our technology Polanco Process and added Fernando Fernández-Polanco signature to our logo. A humble tribute that reminds us of our origins and our purpose: technology that solves real problems elegantly, with technical rigour and humanity.
