The entry into force of the Andalusian Regional Government's Sludge Order on August 6, 2018, brought about a major regulatory change in the use of sewage sludge in the agricultural sector. It required Andalusian wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) to make strategic decisions regarding their sludge management.

EMASESA, always a pioneer, responded to the challenge by reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and, in the tender for the Operation & Maintenance of Seville's largest wastewater treatment plant (Copero WWTP), included thermal hydrolysis technology as an improvement.

The joint venture FACSA-SANDO, awarded the O&M contract, after evaluating all commercial options, opted for teCH4+ technology and its techno-economic advantages.

The first commercial teCH4+ plant, in 24/7 operation since 2020, ensures sludge hygienisation and increases biogas yield.
